Private company comps: 7,412 valuation observations across 933 companies, every one traceable to its SEC filing
Every figure here was read out of a public SEC filing, and every row names the filing it came from, so any number can be re-read at its source. Coverage runs January 13, 2021 to July 17, 2026, drawn from 828 filings by 182 reporting funds and issuers. Free to read.
Most of what is here is what a regulated holder currently carries a company AT: fund and lender fair-value marks. A smaller part is what a share was actually PRICED at, from charters and from disclosed acquisitions. The two are different kinds of evidence, they are never blended, and the table below says which is which.
The last figure is measured, not asserted: 7,412 of 7,412 rows carry both an accession number and a working link to the filing. A row that cannot name its filing is not published.
Where the data comes from
| Rail | Observations | What the filing obligation is |
|---|---|---|
| N-PORT fund mark | 4,680 | Registered funds report the fair value of every holding quarterly on Form N-PORT, private holdings included. |
| BDC equity mark | 1,938 | A business development company files a schedule of every investment it holds with its 10-K, at fair value, with the share count. |
| S-1 charter round | 784 | A company filing to go public attaches its charter, which defines the issue price of each preferred series. |
| Rule 3-05 transaction | 10 | An acquirer of a significant business must file the target's audited financials, giving revenue against disclosed consideration. |
Each rail is a legal reporting obligation rather than a survey, which is why the figures can be re-read at the source. The method page states the exact field or defined term used in each case, and the capabilities page states what these rails structurally cannot reach.

Questions
Where does each number come from?
One SEC filing, named on the row. Every row carries the accession number of the filing and a link that opens it, plus the filing's own field or defined term that produced the figure.
Is this a market census?
No. It is what 4 specific public-filing rails reach, which is 933 companies. A private round held by no registered fund and followed by no S-1 does not appear here at all, and most seed and Series A rounds are in that category.
Is a fund mark the same as a transaction price?
No. A fund mark is the filer's own fair-value estimate at a quarter end. Two funds can mark the same company differently on the same date. Both marks are carried separately rather than averaged, so the spread stays visible.
How current is it?
The corpus spans January 13, 2021 to July 17, 2026. Form N-PORT is filed within 60 days of quarter end, so the most recent marks trail the quarter they describe.
Can I check a number myself?
That is the point. Open the company page, click the accession number, and the filing opens on SEC EDGAR with the figure in it.
